Pakistan launches historic training for internationally certified mountain guides in Gilgit-Baltistan

ISLAMABAD: A landmark initiative is underway in Gilgit-Baltistan to align Pakistan’s mountaineering sector with international standards, as local guides receive training and certification under the supervision of the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (UIAGM).
Cesare Cesa Bianchi, a representative of UIAGM, arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan to participate in an ongoing training session in Passu, Gojal. The program, organized by EvK2CNR with the support of the Department of Tourism, Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, is being conducted from October 1 to 11, 2025, by highly experienced Italian trainers.
The initiative aims to produce internationally recognized and certified mountain guides capable of providing world-class services to climbers and trekkers worldwide. Experts say the development will not only enhance Pakistan’s standing in the global mountaineering community but also empower local guides and build greater trust among foreign climbers.
Until now, Nepal was the only country in the region offering such world-standard certification. Pakistan’s entry into this critical domain marks a significant milestone for its tourism and adventure industry.
EvK2CNR, under the leadership of Agostino Da Polenza, has been instrumental in connecting Pakistan’s mountaineering sector with global organizations. During their visit, UIAGM representatives and Italian trainers held meetings with Gilgit-Baltistan’s Secretary for Tourism, Sports, and Culture, Zamir Abbas, to discuss future certification opportunities and collaborative training programs. Authorities also revealed plans to develop a comprehensive database of service providers and register a Mountain Guides Association. This platform is expected to play a pivotal role in professionalizing and promoting Pakistan’s mountaineering industry on the international stage. Syed Naveed Jamal
