Weekly inflation up by 1.01pc

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based weekly inflation increased by 1.01 percent during the week ended on April 02, 2026 for the combined consumption group, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported Friday.

According to PBS data, the SPI for the week under review for the group rose to 348.94 points as compared to 345.45 points recorded in the previous week. On year-on-year basis, the SPI increased by 9.12 percent.

The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16 = 100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

The SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs 17,732) increased by 0.70 percent to 331.69 points from 329.39 points. The SPI for consumption groups of Rs 17,733–22,888; Rs 22,889–29,517; Rs 29,518–44,175; and above Rs 44,175 increased by 0.75 percent, 0.82 percent, 0.94 percent and 1.15 percent, respectively.

During the week, prices of 15 items (29.41 percent) increased, 9 items (17.65 percent) decreased, while 27 items (52.94 percent) remained stable.

Major increase was observed in the prices of LPG which surged by 13.28 percent, followed by eggs 2.23 percent, chicken 2.13 percent, pulse mash 1.74 percent, mutton 1.54 percent and milk fresh 0.63 percent. Prices of curd, beef, pulse masoor and clothing items like georgette and shirting also recorded increase during the week.

On the other hand, prices of tomatoes declined by 6.03 percent, garlic by 3.38 percent, potatoes by 1.22 percent, onions by 1.21 percent and wheat flour by 0.92 percent. Prices of bananas, mustard oil, firewood and sugar also witnessed a decrease.

On year-on-year basis, the SPI for the week under review increased by 9.12 percent compared to the corresponding week of last year. During the period, major increase was recorded in the prices of LPG by 53.69 percent, diesel 29.94 percent, gas charges for Q1 29.85 percent, petrol 26.17 percent and wheat flour 24.85 percent. Prices of onions, chilies powder, mutton, beef, powdered milk, rice basmati broken and gur also increased.

Meanwhile, prices of potatoes declined by 49.65 percent, pulse gram by 17.52 percent, chicken by 16.08 percent, salt powder by 12.55 percent, sugar by 11.48 percent, pulse masoor by 11.32 percent, garlic by 10.39 percent and eggs by 7.27 percent over the same period of last year, PBS reported. APP
