Zong records over 1.4Gbps speeds in 5G trial phase

ISLAMABAD: Zong has reported achieving download speeds exceeding 1.4Gbps during its pre-launch 5G field trials conducted in Islamabad and other urban centres, marking a significant development in the country’s ongoing transition towards next-generation mobile connectivity.

The company said the speeds were recorded consistently during testing, attributing the performance to upgraded infrastructure and improvements in network architecture. Enhanced “output-to-spectrum” efficiency could allow operators to deliver higher data speeds while optimising limited spectrum resources, a key consideration for the commercial rollout of 5G services.

Zong’s trial results build on earlier initiatives in the sector. In 2019, the operator conducted Pakistan’s first 5G test, followed by an international 5G video call in 2020 to demonstrate network capability. The company has since continued investments in infrastructure and technology upgrades.

Officials said the proposed 5G deployment framework would focus on improving user experience, expanding digital services and incorporating artificial intelligence for network management. The use of AI, the company added, could help maintain service quality during peak hours.

The operator also indicated that existing 4G users would be able to transition to a high-capacity 5G ecosystem without major disruption.

Telecom sector observers say the latest developments reflect gradual progress towards the introduction of 5G in Pakistan, which is expected to support faster data services and contribute to broader digitalisation efforts. Staff Report
