NEPRA ranks Pakistan’s nuclear power plants among top performers in HSE standards
ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has released its Annual Performance Report for the fiscal year 2024–25, highlighting Health Safety and Environment (HSE) standards across Pakistan’s power generation, transmission, and distribution sectors.
According to the report, the Chashma Nuclear Power Plants and the Karachi Nuclear Power Plants, operated by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), have been identified as the best-performing entities in the country. NEPRA praised these nuclear facilities for maintaining exceptional safety standards and demonstrating rigorous compliance with regulatory and environmental requirements.
The assessment was conducted as part of a comprehensive audit covering 149 entities across the power sector. NEPRA noted that the nuclear power plants emerged as leaders in operational excellence, reflecting strong institutional governance, effective strategic planning, and a sustained commitment to safety.
The report further states that both the Chashma and Karachi nuclear plants have shown consistent improvements in performance over recent years, underscoring the effectiveness of their management systems and long-term operational strategies.
NEPRA officials described the findings as an encouraging benchmark for Pakistan’s entire energy sector. They emphasized that the performance of the nuclear facilities proves that high standards are achievable through professional management, strict adherence to safety protocols, and continuous oversight. The authority expressed optimism that other power generation companies would adopt similar practices to strengthen their own safety and administrative frameworks.
According to NEPRA, the strong performance of these nuclear power plants marks an important milestone for the stability of the national energy system, public confidence, and employee safety. In addition to their contribution to the national grid, the plants have been recognized as successful models for safe, environmentally responsible, and modern energy generation in Pakistan.
The report concludes that the nuclear sector’s achievements provide a roadmap for improving overall sector performance and advancing Pakistan’s transition toward a more secure and sustainable energy future. Syed Naveed Jamal
