Delhi court directs Tihar jail authorities to provide medical care to Yasin Malik
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed Tihar Jail authorities to ensure that illegally detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik receives appropriate medical treatment. The court, however, refrained from issuing any specific order for his transfer to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Mohammad Yasin Malik is serving a life sentence in the notorious Tihar Jail in a politically motivated case.
On Friday, hearing Yasin Malik’s petition, Justice Neena Bansal Krishna directed the jail authorities to provide appropriate medical treatment as per his condition. The court added that if specialized treatment is not available inside the prison, Malik must be taken to a hospital where such facilities exist.
With this direction, the court disposed of Yasin Malik’s petition, filed last year, seeking treatment at AIIMS or another super-speciality hospital in New Delhi or Srinagar due to his deteriorating health. Malik suffers from serious cardiac and kidney ailments and requires advanced clinical care.
Malik’s counsel argued before the Delhi High Court that Tihar Jail lacks a cardiologist to address his medical needs. The Indian govt, meanwhile, informed the court that a fresh notification has been issued restricting Malik’s movement outside the jail or beyond Delhi.
Malik has objected to these orders, stating that they are being passed “routinely and mechanically” without assessing the threat to or from him, or considering other relevant factors. Monitoring Desk
