Wheat crop starts arriving in Chowk Sarwar Shaheed Market

MUZAFFARGARH: Economic activity has gained fresh momentum in Tehsil Chowk Sarwar Shaheed as the arrival of the new wheat crop in South Punjab’s largest grain market has brought visible relief and happiness to traders, commission agents, farmers, and laborers alike.

With wheat being the primary crop of the Thal region, its arrival in the market marks the beginning of a busy commercial season. Traders and shopkeepers report a significant boost in business, while daily wage workers have also started finding regular employment, setting the local economic wheel in motion.

Commission agents (Arhtis) stated that along with wheat, crops like mustard and canola have also started arriving in the market, further strengthening economic activity in the region. Farmers are receiving payments for their produce, which is improving liquidity and encouraging spending across local markets.

“This is the time when the entire economy of the area comes alive,” said a local trader, adding that all stakeholders—from farmers to shopkeepers and laborers—benefit directly from the harvest season. However, market stakeholders urged the government to introduce farmer-friendly policies for wheat procurement to ensure better returns and long-term stability. They emphasized that supportive measures could further enhance the prosperity of farmers, traders, and the wider community, multiplying the current wave of economic optimism. APP
