Dutch Envoy, CII Chairman Pledge to Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Champion Interfaith Harmony in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: In a significant move to deepen diplomatic and socio-cultural links, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Pakistan, Robert-Jan Siegert, held a high-level meeting with Dr. Raghib Hussain Naeemi, Chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII). The high-profile dialogue centered on fortifying bilateral cooperation between the two nations and fostering a global narrative of interfaith dialogue and mutual respect.

During the discussions, Dr. Naeemi expressed profound concern regarding the recent resurgence of terrorism, taking the opportunity to clarify the true essence of Islamic teachings. He emphasized that Islam is a religion deeply rooted in the principles of peace, absolute justice, mercy, and the preservation of human dignity. Highlighting the national character, he asserted that the people of Pakistan are inherently peace-loving. He further elaborated on the CII’s pivotal constitutional mandate, which involves guiding the legislature on matters of national importance to ensure alignment with Islamic principles. “The core teachings of Islam are centered on brotherhood and human dignity,” Dr. Naeemi stated, adding that these values “stand in direct opposition to all forms of violence and extremism.”

Ambassador Siegert commended the Council of Islamic Ideology for its crucial advisory role in promoting social cohesion within the Pakistani landscape. He acknowledged the positive contributions of Islam and other major faiths in advancing tolerance and building bridges of understanding across communities. Reflecting on the evolving social fabric of his own country, the Dutch envoy noted that Dutch society has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past three decades, growing increasingly diverse. He highlighted the active role of civil society in the Netherlands in countering discrimination and fostering an inclusive environment where all citizens can thrive.

Beyond diplomatic protocol, both leaders explored avenues for enhanced people-to-people contact, recognizing that cultural exchange is fundamental to sustainable peace. The conversation emphasized that promoting dialogue among different religions is not merely a political tool but a humanitarian necessity to build mutual understanding in an increasingly interconnected world.

Reaffirming their commitment to global peace, both sides resolved to work collaboratively on initiatives that bridge societal divides and promote a shared message of humanity, tolerance, and cooperation between the Netherlands and Pakistan. (Sajid Ali Zaidi)
