Morocco’s record win streak ends with draw against Mali at AFCON
RABAT: Morocco’s world-record winning streak at home came to an end after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mali in their Africa Cup of Nations Group A match here at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The Atlas Lions, the first African and Arab nation to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final, had won 19 consecutive matches at the venue before this encounter. Morocco took the lead just before half-time when midfielder Brahim Diaz converted a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, which showed Mali defender Nathan Gassama handling the ball while attempting to regain his footing.
Mali drew level in the 64th minute, also from the penalty spot. Forward Lassine Sinayoko was brought down by Morocco defender Jawad El Yamiq, and after another VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot. Sinayoko calmly scored past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, ending Morocco’s run of 11 matches without conceding a goal.
Morocco pushed for a winner and came close in the 78th minute when substitute Youssef En-Nesyri fired a powerful effort, but Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra produced an excellent save. Mali also threatened late on, though Diarra again denied a goal at the other end.
The draw leaves Morocco top of Group A with four points. Mali and Zambia both have two points, while Comoros sits on one. Morocco will face Zambia in their next group match on Monday. Elsewhere in the tournament, Mohamed Salah scored a first-half penalty as 10-man Egypt edged past South Africa 1-0, becoming the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
