Mamdani plans mass gathering on Jan 1
‘Inauguration of a new era’
NEW YORK: New Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to celebrate his “inauguration of a new era” on Jan. 1, expecting to draw thousands of New Yorkers to watch the first Muslim politician and the youngest man in more than a century to lead this city of nearly 8 million.
The mayoral transition has been planning the massive gathering in downtown Manhattan, which will shut down famous Broadway for the ceremony.
The mayor-elect will be sworn in on the steps of City Hall whon is described as a ‘breath of fresh air’.
The American-Pakistani political group, headed by Dr Ijaz Ahmad, contributed $300,000 to finance Mamdani’s transition expenses.
“This inauguration is a celebration of the movement we built, the mandate we won, and the city we are prepared to lead,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Working New Yorkers are at the heart of our agenda and we invite them to join us as we welcome this new era of politics to City Hall.” The mayor-elect is inviting “tens of thousands” of New Yorkers to come down for the traditional event.
