PTI vows to oppose 27th Amendment

KP CM terms the amendment robbery of provincial autonomy; Barrister Gohar calls it attack on federation

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Parliamentary Party has unanimously decided to strongly oppose the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment., terming it an attack on provincial autonomy and a violation of democratic principles.

The party announced that it would launch a comprehensive protest both inside and outside Parliament against the amendment.

The decision was made during a meeting of the PTI Parliamentary Party held in the National Assembly, chaired by Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the party’s chairman. The meeting was attended by senior party leaders and members of the National Assembly, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Khan Afridi also participated as a special attendee.

During the session, participants held detailed discussions on the current political situation, the 27th Constitutional Amendment, and various parliamentary affairs.

Members reiterated that PTI stands as a guardian of the Constitution, democracy, and the rights of federating units, and would not allow any unconstitutional legislation to pass.

The Parliamentary Party further demanded the immediate appointment of opposition leaders in both the National Assembly and the Senate to restore genuine democratic balance within Parliament.

In addition, the party unanimously passed a resolution reinstating Ahmad Chattha (President, Central Punjab) and Bilal Ejaz (General Secretary), in accordance with directions from PTI’s founding chairman,Imran Khan.

The meeting also passed a resolution calling for Chief Minister SohailAfridi’s meeting with Chairman Imran Khan, urging the federal and Punjab governments to facilitate the meeting without delay.

Reaffirming their commitment to democratic values, PTI leaders stated. All pro-democracy forces must unite against unconstitutional amendments.

The 1973 Constitution is a national consensus document and must remain untouched. The current Parliament, being the product of Form-47 results, lacks the moral authority to amend the Constitution…

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister SohailAfridi said on Wednesday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would strongly oppose the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, terming it an attempt to undermine provincial autonomy guaranteed under the 18th Amendment.

“Any move weakening the democratic mandate of the provinces will be resisted,” the provincial chief executive said while speaking to journalists outside Parliament House after attending a parliamentary party meeting.

Speaking to reporters today, Chief Minister Afridi said the amendment amounted to a “robbery of provincial autonomy.”

Furthermore, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan — while speaking on the National Assembly floor — strongly criticised the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, saying it threatened the balance between the Centre and the provinces.

“There is unrest across the country because the federation appears to be encroaching upon provincial authority,” he said, adding: “Amending the Constitution is a serious matter.” Staff Report
