MUSCAT: Oman have named a 17-member squad for their maiden appearance at the Asia Cup, with four players in line to make their international debut.

According to ICC, the team, captained by seasoned opener Jatinder Singh, has been drawn in Group A alongside Pakistan, India and hosts United Arab Emirates. The squad includes newcomers Sufyan Yousuf, Zikriya Islam, Faisal Shah and Nadeem Khan, all of whom are yet to earn an international cap. The selection marks a significant shift from the side that participated in last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies.

Oman’s qualification for the eight-team tournament marks a milestone for the Gulf nation. Head coach Duleep Mendis expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, citing both preparation and opportunity. “It is a reality that we are competing in the Asia Cup – a major tournament and a significant platform for our players to demonstrate their abilities internationally,” Mendis said. “Playing against sides like India and Pakistan is a moment to be embraced by any cricketer. In a T20 format, the outcome can pivot on a single over of brilliance. We have had a solid build-up with the National T20 tournament offering strong competitive exposure, while our training sessions have been focused and intense.

“Competing against elite opposition requires more than just skill. Mental resilience is critical. We are hopeful of making an impression in this tournament and of presenting Oman as a developing cricket nation.” Mendis described the squad as a blend of youth and experience, noting that the team is committed to performing with determination against Asia’s established sides. He added that the tournament would provide a true test of both technical ability and mental strength on a global stage.
