CCD seeks Rs2.59b for katcha operation against dacoits

LAHORE: Amid deteriorating law and order in the Katcha region, Chief Minister Punjab has assigned the Counter-Criminal Directorate the task of launching a full-scale operation against dacoit gangs operating in Rajanpur, Muzaffargarh, and Rahim Yar Khan.

In response, the CCD has demanded a hefty Rs2.59 billion in funds to initiate and sustain the operation. As part of the proposal, Rs800 million has been sought for reward money, while another Rs750 million has been requested for intelligence and secret operations.

The CCD has also requested Rs800 million for scientific investigation tools and technologies. Additionally, Rs7.581 billion has been asked under the head of operational needs, highlighting the scale and scope of the planned offensive.

Despite an earlier budget cut of Rs5.33 billion, the CCD has submitted a new demand for fresh funds, citing urgent requirements for countering well-armed and organized criminal elements in the Kacha area.

The directorate has further proposed special allowances for its personnel, similar to those provided to members of newly established paramilitary forces, underscoring the risks and complexities involved in the operation.

The final approval for these financial allocations will depend on the provincial government’s decision in light of the growing public pressure to restore peace in southern Punjab. NNI
