ISLAMABAD: After Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Omar Ayub Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Shibli Faraz has also expressed concern over the courts’ verdicts in the May 9 cases, involving the PTI leaders.
In a letter written to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi, he has said that fundamental human rights are being trampled upon during the trial of these cases.
“The prosecution and the police’s role is partial and intimidating,” he has said.
Shibli has also raised questions over unusual court timings, saying that continuing hearing of these cases from morning till late at night is against the principles of justice.
He has also pointed out that courts are pronouncing decisions by denying the defendants the right to engage lawyers and state counsels are being appointed to represent the suspects instead.
The opposition leader has also drawn the CJP’s attention to the fact that the courts’ proceedings are being held behind closed doors by limiting the access of the media and hence people are being denied the information they want.
Shibli has requested the CJP to review afresh all cases of the May 9 suspects.
He has appealed to the chief justice to ensure impartial investigations and fair trials in these cases. “The judiciary is the guardian of the constitution. And it is your duty to ensure that justice is done.”
